Battery springs as a generic parts on industrial products seems to be simple and easy to design, but the actual design require sophisticated study especially on the selection of materials. The selection of material need to consider product functionality and the number of process needed on the battery contact spring itself, then the decision can be made based on the above considerations.
Types of Battery Contact Springs:
- Cathode spring
- Dual polarizes spring
- Anode spring
- Dual polarizes spring
Materials of Battery Springs:
On the material front, nickel, zinc, gold coating or stainless steel each has its pros and cons. For example, stainless steel is inferior in its conductivity while has the benefit in its anti corrosion nature and does not require further surface electroplating. Nickel coating can separate into nickel plating and secondary nickel plating after spring formation.
The advantage of nickel plating is no further electroplating is needed, thus refrain from the strangling generated during the electroplating process but the deficiency lies on the inferior soldering in comparison with generic nickel coating. The benefits of secondary nickel plating after spring formation is better soldering and a shinier surface, but the strangling resulted from electroplating often caused tremendous annoyance on the production line. Thus, careful selection of materials can not be ignore.
